This semester in ceramics I focused on creating well crafted bowls and plates that were inspired by my spring break trip to New York, Chicago, Michigan, and the Dominican Republic. I also created a plate that focused solely on Richmond, Virginia and specifically Trinity because after traveling to all these different places, I realized that Richmond and Trinity is apart of me and is my home.
I created all of my pieces on the wheel except for one, (the Richmond plate) that I created by using a mold. Once the pieces were leather hard I carved unique designs into the center of the bowls and plates that reminded me of my time spent in those places. Then once I finished carving, I underglazed the designs to ensure that the glazes would be precise and not run. After the bisque fire I applied clear glaze on top and fired it a second time to finish my pieces off and give them a shiny, smooth surface. |
